DESCRIPTION:Inhomogeneities in the Earth's atmosphere corrupt the wavefron
t of\n incoming submillimetre radiation and\, similarly to the seeing at\
n optical wavelengths\, this limits the resolution and sensitivity of\n
submillimetre aperture synthesis arrays. ALMA will correct for these\n wa
vefront errors by a combination of frequent observations of known\n nearb
y point sources (predominately quasars) and by measuring the\n properties
of the atmosphere along the line of sight of each telescope\n using dedi
cated 183 GHz radiometers. These techniques are critical for\n enabling A
LMA's goal of resolution as fine as 0.005 arc-seconds.
