DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will outline some of the recent work we have
been\ndoing in Cardiff studying the formation of low mass stars. I will\nc
over the progress that we have made in understanding the origin of\nthe st
ellar IMF and it's relation to the mass function of pre-stellar\ncores. I
will demonstrate the role of triggering in the formation of\nstars in a da
rk cloud in Ophiuchus\, and also in the horsehead nebula.\nI will also des
cribe how far-IR and sub-mm data\, together with\nradiative transfer model
ing has allowed us to study whether the\nproperties of dust grains change
as a function of density in a dense\nfilament. These topics all provide a
backdrop to the up-coming JCMT\nGould Belt Legacy survey\, which I will ou
 tline.
