DESCRIPTION:Minkowski never met Shannon\, yet the great minds do meet at\n
lattice decoding -- an innovative direction that connects lattice theory\n
and digital communications. The model of a linear multi-input\nmulti-outpu
t (MIMO) system apply to a range of important problems in\ndigital communi
 cations\, including code-division multiple access\n(CDMA)-based third-gene
ration mobile communications\, multi-antenna\ncommunications for broadband
wireless services\, and the linear\ndispersive intersymbol interference c
hannels. In this talk I shall\ndemonstrate the lattice description of a li
near MIMO system and show the\nuse of lattice algorithms to address the ch
allenge of decoding\ncomplexity as well as a quantitative understanding of
the performance of\nlattice decoding. I shall also outline the special pr
oblems that have to\nbe addressed in the communications context and finall
y point out some\nopen questions.\n\n\n\nBiography\n\n\nCong Ling is curre
ntly a Lecturer in the Electrical and Electronic\nEngineering Department a
t Imperial College London. He received the\nBachelor and Master degrees in
Communications from Nanjing Institute of\nCommunications Engineering\, Ch
ina in 1995 and 1997 respectively\, and the\nPh.D. degree in Electrical En
gineering from Nanyang Technological\nUniversity\, Singapore in 2005. Befo
re joining Imperial College\, he had\nbeen on the faculties of Nanjing Ins
 titute of Communications Engineering\nand King's College.\n\nDr. Ling's re
search spans the areas of wireless communications and\nnetworks\, informat
ion theory and signal processing. He is an Associate\nEditor of IEEE Trans
actions on Vehicular Technology. He has also served\non the program commit
tees of several international conferences including\nIEEE Information Theo
 ry Workshop\, Globecom\, and ICC.
