DESCRIPTION:Ian and Andy work for the team within Arup that among other th
ings provides internal support and guidance to structural engineers throug
hout the firm. In particular\, they give advice on reinforced concrete\, p
articularly for topics not covered very comprehensively in design codes. I
an will talk about the design of slender reinforced concrete walls and sla
bs\, particularly where they are loaded in-plane in both directions\, or i
n shear\, and Andy will discuss strut-and-tie modelling and specifically h
ow\, despite the relatively simple theory and code rules\, it poses challe
nges to designers.\n \nBrief biographies:\n\nIan Feltham has worked for Ar
up since graduating from Cambridge in 1976. He provides guidance and assis
tance on the solution of special engineering problems. These include those
involving advanced methods of reinforced concrete design\, particularly c
omplex structural analysis\, buckling of steel structures and other forms
 of instability\, blast loading\, statistics and dynamics.\n \nAndy Gardner
joined Arup on graduating from Cambridge in 2007. He gained initial exper
ience working as a design engineer on buildings and infrastructure project
s in the UK and Australia. He subsequently had a year working for the IStr
uctE before returning to Arup to provide expert technical guidance on stru
ctural analysis and design of reinforced concrete.\n
