DESCRIPTION:Semiconductor fabrication techniques allow researchers to make
devices containing just a single electron\, resembling an artificial atom
\, with quantised energy levels\, but with far more control than in a real
atom. The long-term goal is to make a quantum computer using a set of the
se "quantum dots"\, each holding a quantum bit of information ("qubit"). I
will introduce these topics and will describe our work on transferring si
ngle electrons between dots using sound waves travelling along a surface.
I will also present our recent work on generating single photons from thes
 e single electrons.
