DESCRIPTION:The monopole formula provides the Hilbert series of the Coulom
 b branch for a 3-dimensional N = 4 gauge theory.\nAfter a brief reminder o
 f the set-up\, I will discuss how the two geometric notions "fan" and "mon
 oid" can be very fruitful for the understanding of the monopole formula. I
 n particular\, these concepts allow to prove properties of the Hilbert ser
 ies for any gauge theory and to identify a sufficient set of chiral ring g
 enerators.\nIn the second half\, I discuss discrete quotients of 3d N=4 Co
 ulomb branches and prove equalities of Hilbert series for a number of diff
 erent cases. Among others\, the results prove recent conjectures on Higgs 
 branches of 6-dimensional N=(0\,1) theories which are related by gauging o
 f a discrete global symmetry.
