DESCRIPTION:This talk will explore topological invariants of susy\ngauge t
heories\, with some emphasis on index-like\nquantities and the notion of h
olonomy saddles.\n\nWe start with 1d refined Witten index computations whe
re the twisted partition functions typically show\nrational\, rather than
integral\, behavior. We will explain how this oddity is a blessing in disg
uise and propose a universal tool for extracting the truely enumerative Wi
tten indices. In part\, this finally put to the rest a two-decade-old boun
 d state problems which had\noriginated from the M-theory hypothesis.\n\nAl
ong the way\, we resolve an old and critical conflict between Kac+Smilga a
nd Staudacher/Pestun\, circa\n1999~2002\, whereby the notion of holonomy s
addles\nemerges and plays a crucial role. More importantly\,\nthe holonomy
saddle prove to be universal features\nof supersymmetric gauge theories w
hen the spacetime\ninclude a small circle. We explore them further for\nd=
4\, N=1 theories\, with much ramifications on recent\nclaims on Cardy expo
 nents of their partition functions.
