DESCRIPTION:Early detection and rapid response to public health emergencie
 s is critical if we are to protect people`s health and save lives. Public
  health emergencies may be detected through “classical” surveillance s
 ystems that gather data about patients or their laboratory test results\;
 through event-based surveillance to detect reports of clusters of disease
 or unusual case presentations\; and more recently\, community-based and p
 articipatory surveillance approaches that harness feedback from members of
  the public. In this lecture\, I will describe how at WHO\, we have devel
 oped our Epidemic Intelligence approach to detect and respond to public he
 alth emergencies around the world 24/7. \n\nOliver Morgan is the Director
  of Health Emergency Information and Risk Assessment\, in the Health Emerg
 encies Programme of the World Health Organization.\n\nThis seminar will be
  chaired by Dr Mark Reacher\, Public Health England Field Epidemiology Ser
 vice.\n
