DESCRIPTION:Several proofs of the nonlinear stability of Minkowski space a
lready exist. These assume various approximate symmetries of the perturbed
spacetime\, including those generated by boosts and scaling\, so they nee
d to be heavily modified before we can study the stability of black holes
or other objects. What's more\, it is unclear exactly how much these proof
s rely on the structure of the Einstein vacuum equations - could they be a
dapted to alternative theories\, or cases involving matter?\n\nIn this tal
k I will present a new proof\, which avoids assuming many of these approxi
mate symmetries\, and can also be applied to a very broad class of equatio
ns. I will also discuss an interesting phenomenon - formation of shock wav
es at infinity - encountered during this work.
