DESCRIPTION:This roundtable will discuss emerging forms of expertise among
patients and non-dominant medical voices in various settings across late
twentieth century. Drawing from a wealth of archival research\, oral histo
ries and ethnographic sources\, this expert panel sheds light on how criti
cisms of medicalization led to the rise of alternative cultures of biomedi
cal orthodoxy within the context of the developments of new market and tec
hnologies. Focusing on pregnancy\, childbirth and HIV AIDS\, these present
ations look at the increasing participation of patients and peripheral med
ical ‘experts’\, guided by their own experience\, as co-agents and som
etimes opponents in the creation of medical knowledge.
