DESCRIPTION:The prevailing view of 20th century temperature variability is
that\n the Earth warmed from 1910 to 1940\, cooled slightly from 1940 to\
n 1970\, and warmed markedly from 1970 onward. In this talk I will\n explo
it a physically-based filtering methodology which provides an\n alternativ
 e interpretation of 20th century global-mean temperature\n variability. Th
e results clarify the consistency between the century-\n long monotonic ri
se in greenhouse gases and global-mean temperatures\,\n provide new insigh
ts into the climatic impact of volcanic eruptions\,\n and highlight a glar
ing but previously overlooked error in the time\n series of global-mean te
 mperatures.
