DESCRIPTION:The conjugacy growth function of a finitely generated group co
unts the conjugacy classes that one can spell with n generators (just as t
he standard growth function counts group elements). Like standard growth\,
the asymptotic behaviour of this function is independent of the choice of
finite generating set (although it is not a QI invariant). I will give an
overview of what is known about this function\, and its associated formal
power series\, and discuss various approaches for their study. In particu
lar\, I will outline how Benson's 'patterns' for a virtually abelian group
can be used to study the conjugacy growth series\, and talk about the sit
 uation in some nilpotent groups.\n\n
