DESCRIPTION:Through the use of colonial reports\, aerial photographs\, map
 s and satellite imagery\, I have reconstructed the landscape of the Menabe
  region of western Madagascar between 1896 and 2005. My empirical findings
  show that there is a long history of forest loss in western Madagascar an
 d that deforestation has been driven by the expansion of agriculture\, whi
 ch has occured in a number of booms linked to broader political and econom
 ic processes.\n
