DESCRIPTION:Humans and AI systems are usually portrayed as separate system
s that we need to align in values and goals. However\, there\nis a great d
eal of AI technology found in non-autonomous\nsystems that are used as cog
nitive tools by humans. Under\nthe extended mind thesis\, the functional c
ontributions of these\ntools become as essential to our cognition as our b
rains. But\nAI can take cognitive extension towards totally new capabiliti
es\, posing new philosophical\, ethical and technical challenges. To analy
se these challenges better\, we define and\nplace AI extenders in a contin
uum between fully-externalized\nsystems\, loosely coupled with humans\, an
d fully-internalized\nprocesses\, with operations ultimately performed by
the brain\,\nmaking the tool redundant. We dissect the landscape of cognit
ive capabilities that can foreseeably be extended by AI and\nexamine their
ethical implications. We suggest that cognitive\nextenders using AI be tr
eated as distinct from other cognitive\nenhancers by all relevant stakehol
 ders\, including developers\,\npolicy makers\, and human users.\n\nDraft p
