DESCRIPTION:I will give an overview of my current research\, which aims to
develop new mathematical tools to analyze complex large-scale networks an
d their performance in the presence of uncertainty. During the talk\, I wi
ll specifically focus on power grids\, which are increasingly affected by
uncertainty due to the intermittent nature of renewable generation. \nI wi
ll present a stylized model for power grids under uncertainty which we use
d to derive some novel insights into the interplay between renewable energ
y sources and power grid reliability. Rare stochastic fluctuations of the
power injections\, amplified by correlations and network effects\, can cau
se line failures\, frequency violations or huge power losses. \nI will foc
us on rare events analysis and large deviations techniques\, which in many
instances are crucial to correctly assess the network performance and the
risk of failures\, and show how to use them to identify the most likely f
ailure modes and find the most vulnerable network components. Lastly\, I w
ill discuss various solutions we devised to mitigate the impact of such fa
 ilures and their non-local propagation.
