DESCRIPTION:*Note the unusual room*\n\n*Abstract:*\n\nDatabase systems hav
e been designed to manage business\ncritical information and provide this
information on request to connected\nclients\, a passive model. Increasing
ly\, applications need to share information\nactively with clients and/or
external systems\, so that they can react\nto relevant information as soon
as it becomes available. Event-driven architecture\n(EDA) is a software a
rchitectural pattern that models these\nrequirements based on the producti
 on of\, consumption of\, and reaction\nto events. Publish/subscribe provid
 es a loosely-coupled communication\nparadigm between the components of a s
ystem\, through many-to-many\,\npush-based event delivery. In this talk\,
 we describe our work integrating\ndistributed content-based publish/subscr
ibe functionality into a database\nsystem. We have extended existing datab
ase technology with new capabilities\nto realise EDA in a reliable\, scala
ble\, and secure manner. We\ndiscuss the design\, architecture\, and imple
mentation of PostgreSQL-PS\,\na prototype built on the PostgreSQL open-sou
rce database system.\n\n*Bio:*\n\nLuis Vargas is a PhD student supervised
by Pr. Jean Bacon. His research focuses on possible synergies between data
base and messaging technologies to share information and coordinate proces
ses.\n\nHis interests span the areas of databases\, data dissemination\, e
 vent architectures\, and transaction processing.\n\nBefore Cambridge\, he
spent a few years at GE Mexico/US as technical leader of funds transfer sy
stems. He holds a BSc in computer science from ITC\, Mexico and a MSc in D
istributed Systems from Essex University\, UK.\n\nHe is a member of Jesus
 College.
