DESCRIPTION:Horndeski theories have received a lot of attention as they ar
e fairly simple modifications of General Relativity. However\, these theor
ies can only be considered viable if they possess a well-posed initial val
ue formulation. For diffeomorphism-covariant theories (such as General Rel
ativity and Horndeski theories) this property depends on the choice of gau
ge. It was demonstrated recently that in a generalization of the harmonic
gauge\, most Horndeski theories are not well-posed. In this talk\, I will
discuss some recent results on the well-posedness of Horndeski theories in
  some other formulations.
