DESCRIPTION:Hyperbolic groups form a large and important subclass of finit
ely generated groups. They are defined by a geometric condition\, and this
allows one to use tools from geometry to make strong group-theoretic stat
ements.\n\nThe aim of this talk is to motivate the definition of relativel
y hyperbolic groups\, which are a way to generalise hyperbolic groups with
out losing too much geometric information. To do so we will look at hyperb
 olic 3-manifolds of finite volume.
