DESCRIPTION:There has been interest in reducing the noise emitted by subma
rines for a variety of reasons including defence\, environmental and ecolo
gical issues. One way to do so is to optimally place the ribs/bulkheads al
ong the hull of the submarine to minimise emitted sound. Computational mod
els are not feasible for this purpose as a fine-grained mesh is required t
o simulate at sufficient detail\, but such a mesh is too computationally d
emanding for practical purposes. An analytical model must therefore be use
 d as a starting point. \n\nI will present a much-simplified model consisti
ng of an acoustic wave scattering off a plane with a small step\, where th
e aim is to find the scattering potential. The general strategy for solvin
g the problem will be outlined. The problem will then be compared with tha
t of diffraction by a plate of finite thickness\, as considered in the 197
3 paper by Crighton and Leppington. I will show how symmetry and the solut
ion to the Crighton and Leppington paper can be used to find the solution
for our problem of the plane with a small step.
