DESCRIPTION:The Cambridge Migration Society presents a seminar on the topi
c of sanctuary in the US\, featuring members of sanctuaries in New York.\n
\nFollowing the recent and increasingly aggressive anti-immigration polici
es in the United States\, many houses of worships and their communities ha
ve opened their doors to offer physical sanctuary to migrants in danger of
deportation. The sanctuary movement\, however\, has a longer history in t
he struggle for migrant rights in the United States\, going back to the 19
80s when thousands of Central Americans sought refuge escaping US sanction
ed civil wars in the region.\n\nWith leading community organizers from New
York\, we will be discussing the current state of the movement\, its hist
ory\, its political implications beyond issues of migration\, and the prof
ound critical potentialities against the nation-state paradigms under neol
 iberal regimes.
