DESCRIPTION:Our deep past is marked by recurring failure. Almost all civil
izations that have existed have collapsed. Is our global society destined
for the same fate? In this talk\, Dr Luke Kemp from the Centre for the Stu
dy of Existential Risk (CSER) will give an insight into the prospects of a
future civilizational collapse and what it would mean for modern society.
Archaeologists\, anthropologists and others have identified causes of col
lapse such as inequality\, complexity\, environmental degradation\, extern
al shocks (natural disasters and invasions) and just sheer bad luck. He wi
ll examine modern-day metrics for these common causes of civilizational ca
tastrophe to answer whether we are on the road to collapse. The results ar
 e both disturbing and hopeful.\n\nMembers: Free | Non-members: £3\n\nFoll
