DESCRIPTION:Biology has been mermerised by genes throughout the 20th Centu
ry\, culminating in the genome projects that promised to reveal all the se
crets of organisms and their evolution. However\, despite the insights gai
ned from this approach\, the developmental process whereby organisms make
themselves as coherent\, functional\, adaptive wholes is still not underst
ood. The realisation that genetic information is not the secret of life is
leading us to recognise deeper\, more subtle organising principles that u
nderlie the molecular complexity of living processes and result in the coh
erent emergent wholes that we call organisms. This involves a basic rethin
king of the way biological components interact and self-organise into netw
orks that generate meaningful form\, leading us toward a new biology.
