DESCRIPTION:The classical singularity theorems of General Relativity show
that a Lorentzian manifold with a smooth metric that satisfies physically
reasonable conditions cannot be geodesically complete. In my talk I will d
iscuss current work in progress on proving Hawking's singularity theorem f
or metrics that are locally W^{2\,p} with p greater than the spacetime dim
ension and how similar considerations should also allow for a proof of a v
ersion of the Penrose singularity theorem. This improves upon recent prev
ious work establishing singularity theorems for C^{1\,1} metrics.
