DESCRIPTION:Motile cilia are widespread across the animal and plant kingdo
ms and often display complex collective dynamics which is central to their
physiology. This talk will give an overview of the role of hydrodynamic f
orces in the ciliary beating coordination and orientation of multiciliated
cells in mammalian tissues. I will present our recent results using contr
olled oscillatory external flows on multiciliated cells from brain ventric
les. If the flow is strong enough and at a similar frequency to the active
ly beating cilia then it can entrain the cilia oscillations. Interestingly
\, this effect depends strongly on the number of cilia per cell. I will al
so show preliminary data using constant external flow on an in-vitro cilio
genesis culture of airway and brain ventricle ciliated cells.
