DESCRIPTION:Evidence suggests that mammalian male germ cells carry the epi
genome primed for embryonic development. However\, the mechanisms underlyi
ng establishment and transmission of germline epigenetic information remai
n unclear. Recently\, we found that the histone methyltransferase Kmt2b co
nveys H3K4me3 to prime the spermatogonial stem cell epigenome for spermato
genesis and embryonic development in two distinguishable ways. Because Kmt
2b also primes the ES cell chromatin\, we propose that Kmt2b has the capac
ity to prime stem cells epigenetically.
