DESCRIPTION:Volcanoes are spectacular natural phenomena. Earth has experie
nced \nvolcanism since its beginnings and observing a volcanic eruption is
a \ntruly primeval experience. Volcanoes have shaped our planet and have
\nbeen key in creating and maintaining its habitability. However\, they ca
n \nalso be deadly natural hazards and are implicated in some of the \ngre
atest environment crises in Earth’s history\, such as mass extinction \n
events. Professor Tamsin Mather will explore some of the different types \
nof volcanic activity that we see on present-day Earth and have seen over
\nour planet’s geological history. She will discuss how lessons learnt \
nsitting on the edge of an active volcano today can give us insights into
\nsome of the enigmas surrounding the most profound environmental changes
\nin geological history including mass extinction events.\n\n\nTamsin is a
volcanologist and Professor of Earth Sciences at the \nUniversity of Oxfo
rd\, UK where she has been on the faculty since 2006. \nShe has Masters de
grees in Chemistry and History and Philosophy of \nScience from the Univer
sity of Cambridge. After a year working in \nGermany and then Brussels doi
ng a placement for the European Commission\, \nshe returned to Cambridge c
ompleting a PhD on the atmospheric chemistry \nof volcanic plumes and thei
r environmental effects in 2004. Since then \nher research has broadened t
o explore the diverse ways in which \nvolcanoes interact with Earth's envi
ronment\, the processes driving \nvolcanic unrest and eruptions\, the haza
rds they pose and their resource \npotential. Before joining Oxford she wa
s a Research Council Fellow at \nthe UK Parliamentary Office of Science an
d Technology\, and a Royal \nSociety Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellow. She
won a UNESCO/L’Oréal UK & \nIreland Women in Science award in 2008\, th
e Philip Leverhulme prize in \n2010\, was UK Mineralogical Society Disting
uished Lecturer in 2015/16 and \nthe winner of the 2018 Rosalind Franklin
Award and Lecture from the \nRoyal Society. She has spoken at numerous sci
ence festivals including \nNew Scientist Live and the Cheltenham Science F
estival and participated \nin several TV and radio programmes and document
aries including Radio 4's \nLife Scientific with Jim Al-Khalili and The In
finite Monkey Cage with \nBrian Cox.
