DESCRIPTION:The cost of genome sequencing and wearable sensors have droppe
d dramatically over the past decade. These trends\, in combination with ea
sier data-collection and data sharing over the internet\, are providing fu
el for exciting discoveries in precision medicine. At the same time\, conc
ern about data privacy and fairness in the way data is used and monetised
continues to rise.\n\nThis talk will cover some of the latest advances in
precision medicine including:\n- diagnosis and treatment of rare disorders
(more than 6\,000 rare diseases affect nearly 5% of the population)\n- ph
armacogenomics (how drug safety/efficacy is affected by our individual gen
etics)\n- polygenic risk scores (using large amounts of genomic and other
health data to predict common diseases including breast cancer\, cardiovas
cular disease\, and diabetes)\n\nI will discuss some of the approaches we
are taking at Sano Genetics to progress research in each of these areas\,
while providing individuals with full control of their health data and tra
nsparency around how it is used.
