DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The moduli space of stable curves parametrises proje
ctive curves (of fixed genus) with at-worst-nodal singularities and finite
automorphism group\, and its construction as a projective variety was one
of the great initial successes of Mumford's Geometric Invariant Theory (G
IT). In this talk I will show how to construct moduli spaces of more singu
lar curves\, using the general perspective of 'moduli spaces of unstable o
bjects'. The crucial technical tool is a recent generalisation of Mumford'
 s GIT to non-reductive groups\, due to Berczi\, Doran\, Hawes\, and Kirwan
 .
