DESCRIPTION:In addition to playing fast and loose with terminology\, the d
 evelopment of constitutive relations has in many instances strayed in a ma
 nner that goes against the basic philosophical underpinnings of Newtonian 
 Mechanics. After discussing the faulty and misguided development of consti
 tutive relations\, I will discuss an approach that is not only in keeping 
 with the basic philosophical basis of Newtonian Mechanics\, that also lead
 s to a much richer theory within the purview of which materials can be mod
 eled.
