DESCRIPTION:Deborah Coles is the executive director of INQUEST\, and has w
 orked for the charity since 1989. She leads INQUEST's strategic policy\, l
 egal and parliamentary work and has considerable expertise in working to p
 revent death and ill treatment in all forms of detention and for more effe
 ctive accountable learning. She has been an independent expert advisor to 
 numerous government committees and inquiries\, is a regular media commenta
 tor\, delivers conference papers nationally and internationally and is aut
 hor of numerous articles and publications. Deborah represents INQUEST as a
  member of the Ministerial Board on Deaths in Custody and is independently
  a member of the Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody\; she is 
 also on the board of trustees of Clean Break and Women in Prison.\n\nAll a

 sue a career in the ‘Third Sector’\, especially amidst a broad range o
 f organisations and agencies whose mandates can be loosely collected under
  the umbrella headings of ‘Human Rights and Social Justice’\, ‘Confl
 ict and Security’ or ‘Development and Humanitarian Aid\,’ the terrai
 n can be difficult to navigate. A sound academic training\, the kind provi
 ded by Cambridge University\, is important but certainly not enough to pre
 pare students for the transition into working in this sector. Through a mi
 xture of substantive discussion\, personal reflection and practical advice
 \, the CGHR Practitioner Series brings together high‐level experts worki
 ng in these fields and creates a forum in which students and researchers c
 an listen and ask questions about what this work actually involves\, seek 
 out reflections from experience on the dilemmas and challenges faced\, and
  probe the skill set and experience needed to forge a career in these fiel
 ds.
