DESCRIPTION:Within children’s literature translation studies emphasis ha
s usually been placed on comparing the source text and the target text in
terms of lexis\, semantics\, cultural elements\, etc. What might be a litt
le bit surprising is that scarcely any attention has been given to the rea
der’s embodied experience of the scene in translation. We will address t
his issue during the seminar. Through a close reading of two initial passa
ges – the first from Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery and th
e second from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and thei
r first pre-war translations into Polish\, we will verify whether the pass
ages in the target language might offer their readers at least similar emb
odied experience of certain places to the experience of place which might
be evoked by the original. \n\nBeata Piecychna is a visiting scholar from
the University of Bialystok\, Poland. Her research interests include: chil
 dren’s literature translation studies\, translation theory\, translation
  criticism\, translational hermeneutics\, cognitive linguistics\, cognitiv
e translatology. Laureate of the Kosciuszko Foundation grant to conduct a
study on mental simulation in the translation process at the University of
  California in San Diego. \n
