DESCRIPTION:The complex circuitry that underpins functional diversity of t
he nervous system is formed initially during embryonic development. A majo
r challenge in the neural sciences is to understand the mechanisms that co
nfer identity on embryonic neurons and control the development of precisel
y ordered neural connections. We approach this general question through a
n analysis of the development of spinal somatosensory circuits\, exploring
the molecular mechanisms that dictate axonal trajectory and cell body set
tling position. Our findings demonstrate that transcription factors that d
efine subclasses of somatosensory neurons control select elements of axona
l trajectories by regulating key guidance molecules and provide general in
sight into the way in which sensory relay neurons coordinate subtype ident
ity and axonal trajectory.\n\n\nHost: Dr Clare Baker
