DESCRIPTION:I present a novel type of superradiance that arises in black h
ole binary spacetimes. Given the right initial conditions\, a wave will un
dergo amplification when it scatters off the binary. This process is fuell
ed by the extraction of energy from the binary’s orbital motion\, so doe
s not rely on the spins of the constituent black holes. Despite the inhere
nt complexity of such a system\, analytic results can be obtained in the l
imit where large hierarchies of scales are present\; a limit for which an
effective field theory (EFT) approach is ideally suited. In this talk\, we
will discuss how the general EFT for black holes interacting with externa
l fields is constructed before applying it specifically to study superradi
 ance.
