DESCRIPTION:This talk joins the ongoing debate about the relationship betw
 een empathy and justice\, by examining the neoliberal mobilization of empa
 thy in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. It focuses on a specific cas
 e study: the 2009 criminal trial of Ralph Cioffi and Matthew Tannin\, two
  Wall Street executives charged with conspiracy and fraud after their hedg
 e fund collapsed. It analyzes the entanglement between the discourse of em
 pathy and the neoliberal imaginary and its effect on this trial.
