DESCRIPTION:The interaction of dwarf galaxies and the accretion of dwarf g
alaxies onto\nmassive galaxies are two common processes in the formation a
nd evolution of\ngalaxies. These phenomena can be studied in detail in our
neighbourhood. The\nLarge and Small Magellanic Clouds interact with each
other and are on a path\nof tidal disruption under the influence of the Mi
lky Way. In this\ncolloquium\, I will present the current view of the Mage
llanic system and I\nwill highlight some of the measurements that characte
rise the history and\nstructure of the galaxies\, as well as their kinemat
ics from the observations\nof resolved stellar populations. In particular\
, I will focus on results\nobtained from the VISTA  near-infrared survey
of the Magellanic Clouds\nsystem and from other contemporary surveys at di
 fferent wavelengths.\n
