DESCRIPTION: The first direct detections of gravitational waves (GWs) from
merging binary systems have provided a new set of tools for testing the l
aws of gravity. I’ll explain the rapid progress in testing cosmological
deviations from GR using GWs\, and look forwards to what can be achieved i
n a future ‘observatory era’ of GW detection. In particular\, the lumi
nosity distance of GW sources can help to bound the remaining parameter sp
 ace of modified gravity theories.
