DESCRIPTION:India is widely regarded as the world’s largest democracy an
d\, certainly\, democratic practices within it are strongly developed with
elections held at every level of government and\, it often seems\, every
other week. Yet India’s social order remains marked by hierarchy\, patr
iarchy and casteism and it is among the most economically unequal societie
s on earth. How do we explain this paradox and what do Indians themselves
understand by the concept of democracy?
