DESCRIPTION:This lecture will introduce the various analytical tools used 
 by scientists to unravel fake paintings and will illustrate the relevance 
 of such analyses in a number of specific examples. In particular\, the cel
 ebrated Vermeer forgeries carried out by Van Meegeren will be discussed.\n
 In addition\, a comparison will be made between the different approaches o
 f the Art Historian\, the Curator and the Scientist in their study of pain
 tings. Stylistic examination\, as well as provenance studies\, complement 
 the scientific analyses.\n
