DESCRIPTION:Automotive systems are generally recognised as demonstrating s
trong non-linearities\, which can make it challenging to develop a control
solution for the full operating range. However\, they can also contain si
gnificant uncertainties\, in the form of vehicle to vehicle tolerances\, e
nvironmental influences\, sensor errors\, or because key variables cannot
be measured at all. Combined with the fact that like many energy systems\,
a powertrain shows non-minimum phase behaviour\, this can lead to a range
of highly challenging control problems\, which often require highly dedic
ated control approaches. This presentation will cover three typical exampl
e problems: the control of the combustion process\, the control of aftertr
eatment systems\, and energy management in hybrid vehicles.
