DESCRIPTION:The Neo-Aramaic-speaking communities in Northern Iraq are find
ing themselves in a difficult socio-economic position\, and prospects for
the reconstruction of their communities in the post-ISIS context are bleak
\, leading many to seek emigration. How do these speech communities constr
uct their identity and perceive their language in such situation? What are
the future prospects for Neo-Aramaic in Iraq and the diaspora? And what i
s linguistically unique about Neo-Aramaic in general? The talk will addres
s these issues\, drawing from the fieldtrip in Northern Iraq in which the
speakers participated\, and which took place this March.
