DESCRIPTION:Ball-and-Spring lattices that have a perfect balance between t
he number of degrees of freedom and the number of constraining springs und
er periodic boundary conditions have topologically protected zero-energy s
urface modes and nonlinear elastic Guest-Hutchinson modes. This talk will
provide an overview of these modes in various model systems\, including on
e whose excitation spectrum matches that of a quantum model on a honeycomb
lattice introduced by Kitaev. It will also discuss bulk and surface excit
ation in systems in which the number constraining springs exceeds the numb
 er of degrees of freedom.
