DESCRIPTION:The standard\, aka von Neumann measurements in quantum mechani
 cs yield \nrandom results and result in a projection of the wave packet\,
 where both \neffects are described by the Born rule. They have the propert
 y that \nsubsequent measurements are entirely described by the first outco
 me\, so \nthat one learns very little studying the sequence of outcomes in
  \nrepeated measurements. There exists another kind of measurements\, call
 ed \ngeneralized or Kraus measurements\, which appear e.g. when the \nmeas
 urement is not done directly on the system of interest but on a \nprobe th
 at interacts with it. In such cases\, repeated measurements \n``stay rando
 m''\, and the sequence of outcomes can give information on \nthe system\;
 the process of random states of the system undergoing the \nmeasurements i
 s also of interest. I will review the general theory of \nthese generalize
 d measurements and discuss various results that I have \nworked on in the
 past few years.\n\n\n
