DESCRIPTION:A growing number of people rely on social media platforms\, su
ch as Twitter and Facebook\, for their news and information needs\, where
users themselves play a role in selecting the sources from which they cons
ume information\, overthrowing traditional journalistic gatekeeping. Since
users can just select their information sources\, they don’t have full
control on the content they receive. Moreover\, it is very hard to ascerta
in the quality\, relevance\, and credibility of information produced by so
cial media users\, raising interesting questions like:\n(i) how efficient
are the users at selecting their information sources?\n(ii) how do the use
rs perceive the truthfulness of information? and\n(iii) how does the consu
med information impact the users and the society?\n\nWe analyze social med
ia users’ information consumption along the three dimensions of efficien
cy\, trust\, and divisiveness\, which I briefly describe in the talk.
