DESCRIPTION:I am a Royal Society and Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Dale Researc
h Fellow. My laboratory is within the Department of Molecular Biology & Bi
otechnology\, University of Sheffield and is also part of the Florey Insti
tute for Host Pathogen Interactions. My research group focusses primarily
on the pathogenesis of the human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes through w
hole genome sequencing (WGS) and in vitro disease modelling. we identified
a new variant within the genotype emm89 population that emerged having un
dergone recombination leading to increased NADase and Streptolysin O toxin
expression and loss of the hyaluronic acid capsule. This new acapsular/hi
gh-toxin emm89 variant rose rapidly to dominance. More recently\, we also
identified that other genotypes have gone through similar genome-remodelli
ng events towards an acapsular/high-toxin genotype/phenotype. I will prese
nt our findings and how we think these\, and other\, genetic changes contr
ibute to the success of new streptococcal variants.
