DESCRIPTION:\nCambridge is a renowned center for biotechnology development
s and understanding biological structures is key to many studies. \n\nThe
Cambridge biotechnology company Base4\, has been developing long read leng
th single molecule sequencing technology to leverage the key advantages of
microdroplet systems to deliver high-throughput\, low-cost sequence data
from unmodified sample molecules. Building on this research Base4 has dev
eloped a novel microdroplet manipulation platform that enables the flexibl
e\, reprogrammable manipulation of aqueous droplets with volumes ranging f
rom microlitres to sub-femtolitres. This talk will explore the challenges
involved in developing this technolgy and the potential applications in m
edicine and life science\, including next-generation DNA sequencing and ph
armaceutical discovery workflows.\n\nBarney Balmforth is a Director and Ch
ief Operating Officer at Base4 and has a Masters degree in Physics from Ox
ford University and a PhD in Quantum Optics from Cambridge University.\n\n
