rn Ocean - Simon Thomas (BAS)

DESCRIPTION:The Southern Ocean is an important component in the global cli
mate system\, and some of its dominant features are the deep reaching jets
of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current\, which we expect to correspond to t
hermohaline fronts. I used GMM (a soft clustering technique) on\na hindcas
t model of the Southern Ocean. I show that the boundaries between GMM clus
ters are similar to other definitions of Southern Ocean fronts\, with some
advantages. This method may be a promising way of turning model data into
frontal positions to probe the possible effects of climate change on the
Southern Ocean. The talk would aim to be useful for those interested in us
ing clustering on a new data set\, or climate model intercomparison. Some
of the results are still tentative and I would appreciate robust feedback.
