DESCRIPTION:Dr Emsley\, the award-winning popular science writer and a gre
at communicator will talk about his latest book\, Molecules of Murder. Thi
s continues the theme of his previous book\, Elements of Murder.\n\nMolecu
les of Murder is about infamous murderers and famous victims\; about peopl
e like Harold Shipman\, Adelaide Bartlett\, and Georgi Markov. The talk wi
ll analyse the crimes from the viewpoint of the poison itself\, and by so
doing throw a new light on how the murders or attempted murders were carri
ed out and ultimately how the perpetrators were uncovered and brought to j
ustice. The first half of the talk is about natural toxins which were orig
inally used by doctors before becoming notorious as murder weapons. The se
cond half of the talk deals mainly with man-made molecules and how they to
o have been dangerously misused in famous crimes. The talk ends with the m
ost famous unsolved poisoning case in recent years\, that of Alexander Lit
vinenko who was murdered with polonium chloride. Our knowledge of this poi
son points an accusing finger at his assassin.\n\nNo tickets\, so come ear
ly to get a good seat. Doors open at 18:30. Open to non-members. Free admi
ssion. Suitable for students.\n\nEvent Location: Pfizer Lecture Theatre\,
