DESCRIPTION:India’s interaction with Central Asia has a paradox. There i
s a long history of continuous flow of peoples and ideas between the two r
egions but today India is certainly not among the most important players t
here. The paper traces the rise of Indian trading community in Central Asi
a between 16th and 19th Centuries. The factors responsible for increased t
rade between the two regions and the presence of large number of Indian me
rchants and money-lenders in Central Asia have been discussed. The account
s of English and Indian travellers give interesting and useful details abo
ut the life and activities of the ‘Hindu traders’ in Central Asia. Fin
ally\, the reasons behind the decline of India’s trade with Central Asia
  have been analysed
