DESCRIPTION:I will briefly review key advances that led to the discovery t
 hat glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter receptor in the bra
 in\, presenting this work in the context of what was understood at the tim
 e key discoveries were made. The main focus of the talk will be on the div
 ersity of glutamate receptor function studied using X-ray diffraction and 
 functional studies on diverse species widely separated in evolutionary his
 tory.
