DESCRIPTION:We study multiuser detection where the number\nof users access
ing the channel is unknown by the receiver. In this\nenvironment user's ac
tivity must be estimated together with other\nparameters such as data\, po
wer\, location\, etc. In this paper\, we are\ninterested in the performanc
e of such systems when the number of\npotential users is large. Under some
technical\nassumptions\, statistical-physics methodologies can be used fo
r the\npurpose of determining the macroscopic performance measures of the\
ndetector (e.g.\, multiuser and spectral efficiency). An\nexpansion of the
minimum mean-squared error for large signal-to-noise ratio for the joint\
nestimation of user's activity and their data allows us to analyze\nasympt
otically the user-and-data MAP detector in terms of multiuser\nefficiency
and maximum system load for different quality demands.
